RESPOND TO YOUR CLASSMATES POST:

The topic that I chose is "Raise the Age". This article pertains to the law about 17 year olds being tried as adults. The age is being raised from 17 to 18 as a part of an 18 Bill legislative package. This legislation will also change how these individuals will be detained, tried, and transported.

This package of bills originally took effect October 21, 2021. The new law states that anyone under 18 will be treated as a minor in juvenile court. They will receive the rehabilitation services, that are offered in the juvenile justice system to reduce recidivism, as outlined in the Youth Rehabilitation Services Act. The Michigan Attorney General stated that this legislation is a "pivotal step" for Michigan.

The act of charging 17 year olds automatically as adults began more than a century ago. Intervention and rehabilitation, even that close to adulthood, is both humane and cost-effective for the individuals charged, and for society as a whole. Until this bill passed, Michigan was still one of four remaining states that treated and tried 17 year olds as adults, regardless of what their offense was.
