Answer to question 1:

According to Grison and Gazzaniga (2022, p. 774), Maslow's hierarchy is the psychologist Abraham Maslow's proposed "need theory" of motivation. "Maslow believed that people are driven by many needs, although some needs are more important than others". In this hierarchy, survival needs are the foundation and personal growth needs fall at the top. Maslow believed that you had to fulfill every need before passing onto the next step in the hierarchy, so a person who hasn't fulfilled their survival need of food and water could not reach their self actualization need according to Maslow. This hierarchy of needs has long been acknowledged but does not have much scientific support, so it cannot be applied to everyone. When thinking about the relevance of Maslow's hierarchy and my decision to attend to college, i'd say this decision of mine would fall under the esteem need. The esteem need of the hierarchy is just below self-actualization and consists of good self-opinion, accomplishments, and reputation. I chose to attend college for the accomplishments I will fulfill through my studies and in gaining my future career. This decision skips the step of belongingness and love, which goes against Maslow's belief that one could not advance until every need was met. Attending college may be a means of finding a community and friendship for many but when I made the decision to attend I was focused on accomplishments. The esteem level of need is met by attending college because i earn accomplishments through my grades and through the opportunity to advance into my studies and career. I gain good self-opinion through being proud of good grades and hard work in college, and my reputation within family and friends will most likely be held high if I am a hard worker. I believe that is the reason I decided to attend college but I also believe that for others, the belongingness and love need of the hierarchy can be met by attending college as well because you form new friendships and have opportunities for clubs and sports where you can be accepted and join a community, and attending college in itself is joining a community of students.

Based on Maslow's hierarchy, I have decided to attend college because Higher education can address multiple levels of the hierarchy. At the most basic level, college can provide access to education and skills which can lead to better job opportunities and financial stability. Furthermore, forming social connections and gaining a sense of belonging are common aspects of the college experience, and acquiring knowledge and achieving academic success can boost self-esteem. Pursuing higher education is also a path to professional development and allows me to realize my full potential and pursue my passions. College fulfills different levels of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
