Sarah is a 13 year-old middle school girl in a suburban community. She comes from a upper middle class, blended family. Sarah has been diagnosed with anxiety and depression. She experiences some difficulties in school with peers and managing her emotions. She lives with her mom, step-father, and 2 year old half sibling. Step-father often travels for work and mom works full-time and takes care of the children.
My practicum site provides counseling services to adolescents, aiming to improve their mental health and academic performance. They work closely with the students and families to address issues such as learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and emotional challenges. As a social worker at my practicum site, the approach is to think globally by understanding the broader social and economic factors affecting Sarah's life. This awareness helps contextualize her challenges within a larger framework. However, the interventions and support strategies are localized and specific to Sarah's immediate environment. As a social worker at my practicum site, I am able to "think globally" by understanding the systemic issues affecting the client's life and "act locally" by implementing targeted interventions.
I have a variety of experience with the IEP process. I have been a member of the IEP team as well as a parent participating in the development and review of an IEP. For the IEP process I have provided feedback as the social worker and counselor, contributed goal recommendations, and collaborated with teachers, special education educators, and school administrators.
