The school-to-prison pipeline is the subject of my capstone project. It is an important problem that interacts with my passion for social work, particularly in the field of education. This phenomenon has gained significant attention in recent years due to its detrimental impact on students and the urgent need for intervention. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the school-to-prison pipeline is a result of policies and practices that push students out of schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems (ACLU, 2021). The school-to-prison pipeline is a major flaw in the education system that keeps children in cycles of poverty, marginalization, and incarceration. In spite of the efforts that have been made to address the problem, imbalances continue to exist, which shows how important it is to make big changes to stop the pipeline and encourage new ways of disciplining and helping students in school.

The school-to-prison pipeline has a profound impact on at-risk children, jeopardizing their educational trajectories and future prospects. Students who are disproportionately affected by this pipeline often come from low-income communities, have disabilities, or belong to racial and ethnic minority groups. They face harsh disciplinary measures, such as zero-tolerance policies, suspensions, and expulsions, which disrupt their education and increase their likelihood of involvement in the criminal justice system. I decided to make the school-to-prison pipeline the subject of my capstone project because of the far-reaching effects that the school-to-prison pipeline has on social justice and equity in the educational system. As someone who aspires to become a school social worker, it is of the utmost importance to address the underlying causes of this pipeline to guarantee that every student has access to a secure and encouraging learning environment that fosters both academic and personal growth. Addressing the issue of the school-to-prison pipeline is essential for me to fulfill my commitment to social justice and to working for the well-being of all students, as I intend to become a school social worker in the future. It is my intention to contribute to the creation of learning settings that are more equal and inclusive, and in which every child has the opportunity to achieve success, by recognizing and challenging the structural challenges that contribute to this issue.

A potential research question for my capstone paper is what or how the educational system's policies and practices contribute to the disproportionate rates of suspension and expulsion among students of color, those with disabilities, LGBTQ+, and children from lower-income homes in comparison to white students. Furthermore, what are the implications of these statistics for the continuation of the school-to-prison pipeline? Social work students can actively contribute to preventing the school-to-prison pipeline through various strategies. Early intervention programs, led by social workers, can identify and address the underlying issues that contribute to students' behavioral challenges. Collaboration with educators, parents, and community organizations is essential in creating a holistic support system for students at risk. Advocacy for restorative justice practices and educational reforms is another crucial aspect of preventing the pipeline. Restorative justice focuses on repairing harm and restoring relationships, rather than punitive measures. By advocating for these practices and educational reforms, social work students can promote a more inclusive and supportive school environment. To effectively prevent the school-to-prison pipeline, social work students should advocate for the implementation of trauma-informed approaches in schools. Recognizing the impact of trauma on students' behavior and providing appropriate support can help break the cycle of punitive discipline. (Dutil, 2020). Addressing root causes such as inadequate mental health support, poverty, and discrimination is crucial in preventing the pipeline. Social work students can advocate for increased access to mental health services in schools, address socioeconomic disparities, and work towards creating an inclusive and equitable educational system.

In order to collect descriptive and statistical data on the school-to-prison pipeline, I would make use of resources provided by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) of the United States Department of Education and the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). In order to provide critical insights into the magnitude and influence of the pipeline, these groups generate thorough statistics and publications on educational disparities, disciplinary policies, and engagement in the juvenile criminal system. According to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, African American and Latino students are suspended and expelled at higher rates than white students. This shows that there are widespread inequality issues in the school system. These ways of punishing students keep the School-to-Prison Pipeline going by sending students who are already at a disadvantage out of school and into the criminal justice system. To solve this problem, we need to look closely at the policies and practices that affect some groups more than others, and we need to push for different solutions that put help and intervention ahead of penalties.

I plan on gaining insights into the criminal justice system by interviewing a probation officer. This interview will allow me to gain an understanding of the interactions between the educational and criminal justice systems. The probation officer I will interview may be able to provide me with a valuable perspective on existing policies and practices and may also point out areas for improvement and ways to collaborate with the educational and criminal justice systems. I figured I could also interview with a school social worker, seeing as they play a vital role in early prevention programs. I want to understand the interaction between prevention programs and student behavior from the perspective of the school social worker and see how that strategy addresses the pipeline.

The school-to-prison pipeline is a complicated problem that needs attention and action. A school social worker could make a difference by pushing for policy changes, putting in place preventative measures, and working together across systems. Social work students can help break the cycle of the school-to-prison pipeline and make the school system fairer and just by addressing the causes, pushing restorative justice practices, and giving all-around support to students who are at risk.
