Roadrunner Transport (Pty) Ltd has been a medium-sized company in the road transport and freight industry since 2010. Its business premises are in the Alrode industrial area, south of Johannesburg. The company has 25 employees. These include eight office workers (including company management), three heavy-duty-vehicle mechanics, four workshop and general assistants and ten truck drivers. The company owns the premises from which the business operates and has a fleet of vehicles that includes 17 long-distance commercial trucks, 19 trailers, a mobile workshop, one delivery vehicle and three company cars. Eleven of the trucks are ten years old, and the average age of 15 of the trailers is ten years. The company acquired the rest of the trucks and trailers during the last five years.

The workshop on the premises is fully equipped to service and maintain all the vehicles and trailers. The company has concluded several road haulage contracts with companies requiring regular road transportation services throughout South Africa and the SADEC countries. The company regularly transports goods between Johannesburg and the Durban, Richards Bay and Maputo harbours.

The current book value of all the vehicles and trailers is R45 000 000, the premises are valued at R12 000 000 and the business equipment to keep the business operational is valued at R950 000. Although the company has been operating successfully since its inception, the executive management is concerned that the risk profile for transport and freight in South Africa has changed over the last four years. Roadrunner Transport needs to reassess its business risks and develop an effective risk management plan for the business. The company's executive committee tasked you as Roadrunner's financial manager to form a task team to develop a risk management plan for the company. Required: The task team consisting of yourself, the transport manager and a representative of the National Institute for Transport and Road Research developed an outline of a risk management plan during the first meeting. Provide and briefly explain five (5) key risk factors identified that pose the highest potential threat for Roadrunner Transport (Pty) Ltd as a going concern.
