Role-play 2 - Delegating work For this role-play you are required to delegate work to a team member. The assessment will take place on a simulated Board Room with your assessor playing the role. All tasks in the Role-play Checklist must be performed and observed to complete this assessment. Role-play 2 Scenario As the Team Leader for the Food and Beverage Service team in The Righteous Room at The Righteous Inn, you are aware of the many benefits that delegating work to team members can bring to everyone involved. You make a regular practice of delegating tasks to your team to give them variety in their daily work, develop their skills and increase their self-confidence. Today you are going to speak with a relatively new bar staff team member about delegating to them the task of reconciling the POS register at the end of a service session in The Righteous Room starting next week. This will be their first time doing this job but you feel they are up to it and you plan to spend some time this week with them showing them how it's done before they get to do it 'for real' on their own. To make sure this delegation works effectively, you spend a minute reflecting on the task you are about to delegate, and you remind yourself of the principles of delegation you need to make sure are complied with. You don't really expect any problems with this delegation but traditionally you have found several people reluctant when it comes to being asked to 'balance the takings' atthe end of a Sess510n. In your experience, they don't seem comfortable with handling all that cash, they often don't trust their math's and they certainly don't want to stay back long after all the others have gone home! You check your watch and see it's time to go and meet with the team member and discuss the delegation. Good luck! Role-play 2 Checklist tasks 1) Delegate work: a) Identified and clearly described the task, what it involved and the time it would be likely to take? b) Explained the benefits this delegation would offer to the team member for their career? c) Stated confidence in their ability to do the job based on observations already made of their mental arithmetic and money handling skills? d) Explained the training and practice that would precede the delegation (on-the-job coaching), and the assistance that would be available 'at the time' to help with the task (calculator, presence of team leader to assist if required)? e) Highlighted the team member would be left alone to do the POS reconciliation and would not be micro-managed? f) Acknowledge fears and concerns raised by the team member regarding the delegation as valid and addressed them effectively, putting the team member's concerns to rest? g) Obtained agreement from the team member regarding the delegation and a commitment to the required training and follow-up meeting to discuss progress?
