The first step in this process, is seeking guidance and gathering further knowledge to better understand what exactly will work best for the business in the health care industry. After review, it has been recommended that the UMUC Family Clinic implements the utilization of information technology, precisely the use of an Electronic Healthcare Record (EHR) to improve the clinics short comings from being in the state of a non-technology advanced clinic. The specific EHR system that has been recommended to maximize the improvement for the clinic is, Endo Vault EHR application from EndoSoft, which is a leading healthcare information technology company. The following information listed below will describe what Endo Vault has to offer to the UMUC Family Clinic and what can be expected when deciding to utilize this EHR system. CPOE: Integrated CPOE module assists in minimizing medical errors and improves the efficiency and quality of care. E-Prescribing: EndoVault Rx, a fully integrated e-prescription application that minimizes healthcare cost. (EndoVault Rx is certified by Surescripts) Procedure Documentation: provides the ability to build and customize templates for consistency and efficacy in the workflow. Clinical Content: provides built-in templates which allows streamlined documentation of patient history, procedures and assessments, etc. Advanced Security: HIPPA compliant; the ability to authenticate, authorize and segment access to patient records to maintain data integrity. Clinical Decision Support: access to real-time recommendations, diagnosis guideline and medicines. Patient Portal: grants patients with access to their information, medical questions they may have, or electronic messaging. Physician Dashboard: a centralized worklist of all physician activities updated in realtime. Improves the overall performance of the clinics workflow with the real-time capability. Software that is required for Endo Vault is First Databank, MaxMD Configuration Mgr, Pop Health and NIH. However, with the implementation of this specific EHR, it would be in the UMUC Family Clinic's best interest to utilize the SaaS system that is offered rather than the EHR being hosted in the computer(s). Quick start up, necessities are internet access and a web browser. SaaS vendor covers any maintenance of hardware that is required or needed as well as deciphering which operating system version supports which database. As well as purchasing four tablets, one for each of the three exam rooms as well as one for the nurses when one needs to be away from the front desk, both nurses will have access to the system at all times. The UMUC Family Clinic will need to ensure their wireless connectivity is sufficient in order to sustain the entire staff working and having access to the EHR at once. Endo Vault is compatible with HD processors, which means the clinic will still have the capability to pull up images and x-rays with a specific cable to pair the HD processor with the EHR. Endo Vault also has the capability to interface with any EHR. Based on the information mentioned above, the focus needs to be on the impact of Endo Vault EHR within the UMUC Family Clinic. The patient visit process will enhance, patients can update their information on tablets provided at check in or prior to their office visits from their home with the use of the patient portal in Endo Vault; the database is updated instantly because of the real-time capability. Patients also have the ability to document why they are at the clinic and what they would like to discuss with the physician. This will assist and expedite the physicians' appointment visits as well as creating the patient visit more personalized. Knowing exactly what a patient needs increases the quality of care that the office can provide. Another benefit is setting up the EHR to alert when a patient enters in the database that they have abdominal pain; which can assist the staff in prioritizing who needs to be seen sooner rather than waiting. The EHR can also assist the staff in safety within the office, if patients can indicate that they may be a threat to themselves or to others, staff can be on high alert as well as making sure to take special precautions in the office for their safety. CASE STUDY, STAGE 3: EHR TECHNOLOGY PROPOSAL 4 Due to the electronic capabilities of the EHR, staff and patients will be satisfied with new implementation. Patients can have their prescriptions sent to the pharmacy and by the time they leave the office. When a patient is referred to a specialist, supporting documents can be sent electronically to the specialist prior to the patient's appointment, this eliminates the standard procedure of staff copying charts, faxing records as well as saves the patient time from picking up their x-rays or paperwork to transport with them to the specialist. Utilizing Endo Vault will improve the quality, safety and efficiency of patient care which is a common goal for the UMUC Family Care Clinic, it is the optimal solution.
