Salmonella outbreak and the demand for eggs A salmonella outbreak in the United States was linked to several illnesses, and resulted in the recall (withdrawal from the market) of millions of eggs. The recall led to an increase in egg prices of about 40%, resulting in a substantial drop in egg sales. At the same time, organic stores saw increases in their sales of organic eggs, as consumers chose these as a safer alternative.
