Sandra Mireles, CFO of LUMINIC, has decided to invest six years from now, starting today, in new machinery to produce LED lamps for office use. The cost of the new machinery will be, at the time of purchase, $10,560,000. In order to have the money to be able to buy the machine in six years, today she has decided to start a savings which will have the following characteristics:

  • The first two years will contribute to a fund a constant amount at the beginning of each four-month period.
  • The next two years she will save a constant amount at the end of each two-month period. The amount of each of these contributions will be equal to twice the amount of each of the contributions that she will make in the first two years.
  • Finally, for the last two years, she will deposit in the savings fund at the end of each month a constant amount that will be equal to one third of the amount of each of the contributions that she will make in the first year.

The rates of return that this savings fund will pay are the following:

  • The first two years a nominal annual rate compounded semiannually of 6%.
  • Subsequently, a nominal semiannual rate compounded monthly of 3.25%.

NOTE: The next two questions are independent.

Calculate the amount of the monthly contribution that she will make in the last two years.

Assume that this LUMINIC investment project, after making the investment in the new machinery, will generate semi-annual cash flows in perpetuity at the end of each semi-year, increasing at a constant semi-annual rate of 3%. The first semiannual cash flow will be for an amount of $790,000. If the opportunity cost of capital is 15.5% nominal annual compounded semi-annually, calculate the net present value of the project.
