The Argument: Even though the 1993 Family Medical Leave Act FMLA allows American parents to take up to twelve weeks of unpaid family leave to care for a new child, this act should be amended to provide for paid leave for all new parents. First, many Americans currently are unable to take advantage of the FMLA leave. Instead of taking the whole twelve weeks of leave a majority of parents must return to work within two weeks due to financial constraints. In fact, in 2015 the Bureau of Labor reported that 60% of workers who took unpaid leave reported difficulty making ends meet without a salary. In addition to the parents' ordinary expenses, new babies add even more bills.For instance, the US Department of Agriculture found that new parents spend, on average, an additional $95 a month just for baby clothes and diapers. Secondly, the Department of Labor has reported that paid maternity leave can increase female labor force participation and this participation will generate almost $500 billion of additional economic growth per year. Finally, twelve weeks of paid leave will benefit both mothers and babies. For example, a 2011 study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information found that paid parental leave can reduce infant mortality by as much as 10%. Also, a study by the American Psychological Association concluded that mothers who took twelve weeks or longer leaves reported fewer symptoms of postpartum depression.
