Scenario 1 Concerns have been raised with you regarding the turnover of staff in one of Acme Health's aged care facilities. You have conducted an audit of the employees who have left that facility or been transferred to another. Included in the audit is demographic information on the employees who have left and their exit interviews. The audit reveals that a disproportionate number of the employees who have left, or been transferred, are from CALD backgrounds; have held entry level positions throughout their period of employment, none of them have been promoted, received bonuses or other performance rewards, nor participated in training beyond regulatory requirements. The significant majority of the exit surveys raise lack of developmental/career progression opportunities and appropriate recognition and reward for performance as the reasons for leaving. All decisions on bonuses and performance rewards, developmental/career progression opportunities and training are made by the facility manager, Jane Jones, who is not from a CALD background. 1. Use, as relevant, similarity attraction theory, social identity theory and social categorisation theory to examine the situation; and 2. Suggest a solution to the potential problems arising from the situation.

Scenario 2 Last October, the manager of the client complaint office contacted you concerned about the change in work performance by one of the client complaint employees, CC. Until recently, CC had been the most productive and cooperative of the complaint office employees. However, over the last six weeks or so CC had taken a number of days sick leave, had not been meeting agreed work goals and had become generally withdrawn and uncooperative when the manager had tried to initiate discussion on these issues. This behaviour started shortly after the introduction of a new study leave policy. Prior to the new policy, access to study leave was not codified and 2 hours leave per week leave was granted on an ad hoc basis, subject to satisfactory progression, to employees who were completing a TAFE or university qualification in any field. However, under the new policy the 2 hours study leave is only available where an employee is enrolled in a TAFE or university qualification in a field directly related to their current employment. CC is enrolled as a part-time student in a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in Modern History. CC has successfully completed 4 years of part-time study.

Based on your knowledge of the psychological contract 1. Provide an explanation of why CC's work performance has become less than satisfactory; and 2. Suggest a solution to the problem.

Scenario 3 Following an audit of usage of Acme Health's credit cards approved for use by Acme Health's employees for business related purposes you were advised that GM, one of Acme Health's facility managers, appeared to have used their work credit card for private purposes. The transaction of $3,000 was paid as a security requirement of a bail condition for one of GM's siblings. GM has been employed by Acme Health for 5 years and always performed their work in a satisfactory manner. With reference to your understanding of the role of the human resource manager explain: 1. what disciplinary action, if any, you will take against GM; and 2. your reasons for taking such action.

With reference to your understanding of the role of the human resource manager explain the following:

  1. What action you will take with respect to the circumstances.
  2. Your reasons for taking such action.
  3. Would your response differ if one of GM's parents was a member of Acme Health's executive team? Why/why not?
