Scenario As a room attendant at The Righteous inn you have become increasingly alarmed at the number of back injuries, strains and injuries your co-workers are experi encing. You have had to spend a few days off work yourself from time-to-time and you are fairly sure that was because of the work you do and the processes that are in place for room attendants servicing rooms at the hotel You have spoken to some of the other room attendants and they hold similar views. A look through the WHS records indicate room attendants complete most of the 'Accident and Incident" reports and take the most time-off through illness and injury. Of special concern to you are three main issues you believe account for the majority of problems - the first relates to the training provided to Housekeeping staff. While to initial training provided to room attendants was excellent it has not been changed for over 10 years and the beds, the configuration of the rooms and the staff have changed many times since them without any update to the training that is currently given to new employees: they are still trained in an out-of-date dummy suite in the training department using items and facilities more than a decade old. The second relates to the way the beds in the rooms are made: every room is serviced just by one room attendant at a time and those mattresses and beds are heavy! If the wrong technique is used it doesn't take long for back problems to emerge. Room attendants are generally tasked with servicing 16 rooms per shift and that can mean having to strip and re-make nearly 40 beds every day for some workers. Thirdly you know that the bathroom is the scene of many slips and falls as room attendants rush to get their work done and often employ less-than-safe practices to help them get their allocated work done within their shift to the standard expected. You yourself have used items you should not have used in the bathroom, and engaged in unsafe work practices to get the job done. But you've had enough and this morning you asked to see the Executive Housekeeper to share your concerns There was an agreementto meetin the office at 3:00 this afternoon You look at your watch and it's five minutes to. Time to get going - good luck
