Scenario During early January 2021, a senior citizen slipped at the entrance of the Fantasy Supermarket (Fantasy) within Hulbumale Centro Mall, shattering her shoulder joint and cracking her spine in the 5th such incident in recent months, according to news reports. In response, Fantasy Supermarket has issued a surprise notice of closure, claiming that the location is "inappropriate for a supermarket." Haxwa Ali, the 72-year-old woman who was injured, had to undergo a three-hour operation. Through a public statement, Fantasy claims that the store's floor design, particularly the step near the door, causes customers to trip and fall, and that this is the primary reason for its closure. Fantasy also claims that other customers have contacted the business requesting monetary compensation for their injuries, but that the company sees no wrongdoing as the building isn't theirs and they can't modify the design as per the rental agreement. Fantasy Supermarket is said to have brought to the attention of the property owner, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), a number of falls and accidents that have occurred inside the premises. Fantasy also claims to have attempted to achieve an amicable agreement with HDC regarding what it believes is a 'faulty design' and seeking compensation for injured clients. HDC, on the other hand, has a different story to tell. It argues that no such issue has been brought to its attention and denies any wrongdoing on their side. Officials from HDC have claimed that all of their commercial property designs are compliant with local building regulations and remain safe. It also argued that it approves requests from renters upon request, for customizations to a level that does not impact structural integrity. The Fantasy Supermarket in question, which caters to tourists and the wealthy, was one of the first businesses to establish a store in Centro Mall in early 2017. It will now be closed at the end of January 2022, after a steep decline in customer traffic over the last 5 years. A corporate official from Fantasy said that it will only be able to close in mid-March, citing the risk of 'irreversible consequences if the rental agreement with HDC was abruptly terminated. Centro Mall has many notable businesses in operation including banks, garments stores, salons and medical facilities. As a one-stop shoping mall and the first of its kind in the country, HDC which owns and manages the building, described "Centro" as a contributer to the successful economic developments taking place in and around Hulumale Hawa Ali and her family are now seeking a legal remedy, but remain powerless as they don't know which firm is to be blamed for her injuries
