Background

Spruce Studios is a movie production studio based in Vancouver, BC. Spruce Studios is committed to telling meaningful stories, and for 30 years, their work has captured the imaginations of audiences across the globe. The studio has won innumerable, prestigious awards, including Oscar shortlists, an Emmy, Geminis, a Sundance Audience Award, and many more. Spruce Studios' commitment to the craft of filmmaking has resulted in collaborations with renowned broadcasting studios, such as the BBC, the CBC, Channel 4, PBS, and Smithsonian, among others. Priding themselves on producing a politically, ethically, and socially minded repertoire, Spruce Studios is a voice for the voiceless, telling brave and emotionally risky stories, and is praised for the social justice savviness of their creative output.

The Problem

Spruce Studios regularly includes swag (such as promotional materials) for new clients when they complete a sign on package, attend a move premiere, or attend a conference. Recently, though, some employees have raised concerns about the environmental impact, cost, and value of the swag Spruce Studios currently provides. Some employees say that the swag- such as foam stress balls, pens, polyester tote bags, and business card holders with Spruce Studio's logo- look "cheap" and out of touch with the high-end, modern clients it attempts to build relationships with.
