Scenario: Thomas is a 20-year-old man who lives in a small quiet neighborhood in downtown Toronto. Thomas has autism spectrum disorder, he can not verbally express himself and has limited independence in day to day activities. He is often accompanied by staff or a helper. Thomas has very limited verbal communication and often uses his AAC device to communicate. He resides in a group home with other people who have similar disabilities and communication skills. His main social circles are other residents as well as staff. Thomas has family, but they rarely come to visit him at the group home, only ever visiting on holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving. Thomas does like his family but he prefers the company of other residents or staff. Thomas is very outgoing and carefree. He can handle large crowds but only in limited quantities or times before he begins to feel overwhelmed. Thomas doesn't dislike crowds but he also does not enjoy them too much, if there's an option to avoid it, he will. Thomas doesn't speak up much around new people until he becomes used to them. Thomas is shy at first but once you break into his shell, he's very loud and outgoing.
1) Place: describe the places you know of where people with similar interests may go. List the ideas through brainstorming and point form. "Bridal shows, dress stores, Church Choir practices, etc..... Try to come up with a minimum of 15 places.
2) Presence: How is your plan going to ensure a presence for the person you are supporting? Volunteering? Regular attendance in a group? List your ideas on how to ensure repeated exposure to a couple of the places identified in the previous step.
