SCENARIO:You are all working for a national shipping company that moves freight across the country. You have warehouses in Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Miami- major ports of entry.

The company needs to reevaluate its risk and crisis management plan. In this highly competitive environment, finances are tight, margins are thin, and resources are overloaded.The outcome is to identify the greatest risks to which the organization could be exposed and create a matrix that is supported by the team and can be presented to the Board and shareholders.

To date the company has not had a major crisis, even though the industry has- several fatal truck accidents, two load hijackings, depot break-ins, and multiple criminal employee firings.The company is also aware of an increased industry pressure to unionize workers and drivers.Furthermore, the company is lagging in competitive employee benefits, offering a marginal health plan without family coverage.However, the company is considering an expansion of services into Canada. Additional governmental pollution regulations are expected to add to operational costs in the next three years. Company drivers have been increasingly cited for driving time violations, as industry pressures require maximal driving time to maintain a competitive edge. Several of the transfer warehouses have been affected by hurricanes and other environmental related incidents; while still operational, there is an urgent need for upgrading these facilities. Working conditions for employees have been questioned since several chemical spills due to faulty or old packaging have caused employee illnesses and absenteeism.
