You supervise a team of 10 employees. Your manager has pulled you aside because other teams have commented on your team's attitude and performance issues. Four of the 10 employees you supervise (Mary, John, Lita, and Joachim) are causing tension on the team. Mary and John have very different backgrounds and often do not see eye-to-eye. Mary tends to roll her eyes and snap at John. In retaliation, John often ignores Mary, even about important work-related things.Lita doesn't want to take sides and does not support either Mary's or John's behavior.Instead of dealing with them, Lita, who is new, keeps going to other team members to help her with parts of her job that she doesn't understand.Mary and John were assigned to help answer Lita's questions, and the fact that she is avoiding them and going to other overloaded team members is causing ill will.
Joachim keeps to himself.He likes to show up for work, get the job done on his own, and leave for the day right at quitting time.He feels work is for work and not to make friends.Joachim's cultural background, upbringing, personality, or other factors may be driving his perspective about his role on the team.Some other team members do not feel as though they can trust him.
