School Assignment Exercise Public school districts in the United States and elsewhere must somehow decide which children will be assigned to which schools. In assigning children to schools, school districts typically want to minimize the distances that students travel to reduce transportation costs and times. They also want to ensure some degree of continuity by not having children change schools too frequently. In addition, many school districts consider diversity issues and try to balance various measures of socioeconomic status and student achievement across their schools. In this exercise, we will look at school assignment as an optimization problem using data from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district's 2007 redistricting process.
