Science: Past, Present, and Future LAB #4 Weighting: 5% Marks: 10 Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to design an experiment that can be performed in space. 1. This assessment will be completed at home individually. 2. You will follow the lab procedure indicated. 3. You will have until the deadline to complete the Lab. 4. Answer all questions. Marking Criteria: Components of the lab will be marked as follows. Express non-numerical responses using complete sentences. Component Experiment Design Background Objective Hypothesis Procedure Analysis Total Marks 12 2222 /10 Lab #4: Design experiment for the future Objective: To design a simple experiment that can be conducted in the international space station (with microgravity). Introduction: International Space Station (ISS) is a modular space station that orbits the earth (every 90 minutes) at the low altitude orbit. Five space agencies from USA, Canada, Russia, Japan and Europe are collaborating on this program. Experiments are done in the areas of astronomy, biology, physics and other fields. Most experiments are conducted in specializes modules that dock at multiple parts of the ISS. If you are interested in the docking process, you can use this simulation https://iss-sim.spacex.com/ Most recently (in 2020), SpaceX Dragon Capsule docks successfully at ISS. To read more about the type of experiments that are conducted in ISS, use the following link https://www.nasa.gov/mission pages/station/research/experiments category Procedure: Design a simple experiment that can be conducted in ISS (in microgravity). The experiment does not need to be complicated and can be from Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Earth Science or other fields of science. If the experiment were done on earth already, provide justification why the experiment should be repeated in space. Please include the following in your design 1. Background Provide scientific background and what physical principles are applied. 2. Objective What is the objective of the experiment and why needs to be done in space? 3. Hypothesis and variables Provide a well-defined hypothesis. Define what variables will be manipulated (independent variables), variables measured (dependent variables), and variables that needs to be kept constant (control variables). 4. Procedure A short list of procedures (too much detail is not needed). 5-8 lines of procedures is enough. 5. Analysis and discussion Suggest method of analysis and what should be included in the discussion. You do not need to write the discussion itself.
