Scientists have long recognized the impact of music on human affect. A graduate student at SMU is interested in studying how different genres of music influence people's mood. More specifically, she wants to know if state emotions change based on the genre of music someone is listening to. The grad student tests 4 genres of music in her study: classical, rock, jazz, and country. Participants are randomly assigned to one of the four genres of music conditions. Once assigned to a condition each participant was given headphones and asked to listen to a playlist containing songs from only that genre of music. Participants were then asked to fill out a questionnaire about their current emotional state. Responses were provided on a 1 to 10 scale with lower scores representing a more calm and relaxed state and higher scores representing a more energised and alert state. Below are the results of the experiment, which you will analyze with SPSS/JAMOVI and hand calculations.
Emotional State Ratings by Experimental Group Classical: 4, 2, 3, 6, 2, 1, 3, 2, 5, 3 Rock: 3, 7, 6, 7, 8, 5, 10, 8, 6, 9 Jazz: 5, 2, 4, 2, 3, 5, 1, 2, 6, 3 Country: 9, 6, 5, 7, 6, 6, 3, 7, 8, 6
Questions (1) State the null and alternative hypotheses using symbols (if relevant) and words. (2) What statistical analysis would you use to test this hypothesis?
(3) Conduct the statistical test, effect size, and Levene's test in SPSS/ JAMOVI. (a) What assumption of this analysis does the Levene's statistic test? (b) Are you meeting that assumption (test with SPSS/JAMOVI)? (4) Using only the information in your SPSS/JAMOVI output ANOVA table, (a) show how the MS between and MS within become the F observed value. (b) show how the SS between and SS total become the 2 value.
(4) Conduct post-hoc tests (SPSS: Tukey's HSD/JAMOVI: Tukey) using SPSS/JAMOVI. (1) Fully report the results in APA style (as in the lab example). What can you conclude from this analysis? Please explain fully.
