SECTION-A-MECHANICS SBA#: 8 Date: Skill Assessed: ORR Title: Power Objective: To determine the power dissipated when climbing a flight of stairs. Apparatus: Stopwatch, bathroom scale, metre ruler, flight of stairs Diagram: Height risen Figure 5: Work Done by a Person Climbing the Stairs Procedure: - Determine a subject's mass by using a bathroom scale. - Convert the mass into kilogram and record it. - Calculate in metres, the total vertical height (h) of the stairs, by measuring one and counting the total number to be climbed. - Get another subject with a stopwatch to determine the time taken to run up the flight of stairs. - Calculate the work done and thus the power used to do this job. Results: Mass of subject/person = Ibs Number of Steps = Height of One Step = cm Table 6: Time Taken to Walk & Run Upstairs. #Trials Time/s (Walking) Time/s (Running) 1
