Security through obscurity...this expression suggests that proprietary software is more secure because it is closed. If hackers cannot see the code, then it will be more difficult for them to create exploits...or so the thinking goes.

Unfortunately for Windows users, this thought is simply not true--as evidenced by the never-ending patches (Links to an external site.) coming out. In fact, one of Linux's many advantages over Windows (Links to an external site.) is that it is much more secure. For small businesses and organizations without a dedicated security experts, more security is critical.

So now let's debate! For this assignment, we will have a class discussion where you and your peers will take a side and tell the class why you believe one operating system is more secure than the other. Before any great debate, it is important to research and be able to justify your position.

Directions: In a one- to two-paged paper, describe why you believe that Linux is more secure than Windows operating systems or why Windows is more secure than Linux operating systems. In your submission, make sure to:

  • Include three to five key points of why one operating system is more secure than the other.
  • Defend your position using information from credible sources (i.e., newspapers, articles, magazines, databases). Your key points should be adequately supported by credible sources.
  • Cite your sources in APA format.

During class, we will have a debate in which you use the information from your research to help support your position. Some people will agree with you; others might disagree with your viewpoint. Think of your paper as your background research needed to support yourself during our in-class debate. Your participation grade for the day will be affected by your participation in the in-class debate.

Prepare your paper in a Microsoft Word document named Lastname_U4_Debate.docx and upload it as your submission for this assignment.
