Senior vice president of the Steel's production operations and one of his production managers notice that over the span of ten years the production facility regularly did not meet its planned production volumes. They set out to determine the drivers for the deviations from planned production figures with the ultimate goal to improve the production planning process. Major breakdowns were a common explanation for low production (throughput) and hence "Run Time Ratio" is chosen as one of the key factors for effecting throughput. Run Time Ratio (in %) is defined as run time divided by operating time. Here run time=operating time - (breakdowns, downtime for maintenance, set-up time etc.) and operating time=calendar time - (holidays etc). The research team wants to fit a simple linear regression model for the purpose using throughput (in tons) as dependent variable with run time ratio (in %) as independent variable considering a sample data on previous 500 production days. The excel outputs for this regression analysis are given in Table 1.
