Sexting creates numerous harms - both to individuals and to society.Humiliation of discovery is an immediate harm that can lead to bullying, harassment, suspension or removal from school, and in extreme cases, suicide. The biggest problem, besides the act itself, is the legal and criminal justice response. There are no legal definitions of sexting and for many States this type of act falls within child pornography statutes. Many State's have created their own sexting laws but many still rely on the Federal Child Pornography Statute. Under this statute, offenders and victims can find themselves charged with the potential of 10 years in prison along with 10 years post-prison supervision with sex offender registration requirements?
