- Shady Acres Retirement Home currently has a "no pets allowed" rule. However the retirement home director believes that allowing retirees to own pet cats will have a positive effect on their health. To test this hypothesis, 18 retirees are selected from Shady Acres and half are randomly assigned to receive a real cat while the other half are assigned to receive a stuffed animal cat. To ensure that differences are not found between the groups because of differences in preexisting health concerns, the retirees are first matched on total number of preexisting health concerns, age, and sex before one member of each matched pair is randomly assigned to receive the real cat and the other receives a stuffed cat. At the end of a 6-month period, the number of doctor appointments attended by each of the retirees is obtained (as a measure of health; fewer appointments = better health).
