While unions only take up 12.1% of the workforce, I feel I am surrounded by unionized workers because I work for a labor fund where we provide health and welfare and pension benefits to union workers. California, New York, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania have the highest percentage of union workers within their states and California alone has more union workers than the southern states combined (Sloane & Witney, 2010, p. 7). The biggest driver to this is the society and that there are not as many "blue collar" jobs across the nation and more organizations are moving away from the union. Since there is a limited number of union workers, the organization that I work for has started to promote health and welfare benefits to non union organizations in order to grow and expand. My organization is unionized, although I am not actually in the union because I am in Management, I am very much submerged in the union culture and experience it first hand.

I think that we are going to continue to see a decrease in the union, especially in non-labor intensive jobs, such as office jobs and the union will be most prevalent in the trucking and construction industry.
