Situation
Todays grocery store checkout process has become complex and loaded with technology. Customers, however, do not think about information systems used at a grocery store because problems are infrequent.
When a customer enters the checkout lane and goes through the checkout process, there are several systems in use a scanning system, a pricing and inventory system, a point-of-sale system (cash register), a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system that captures purchase data and data about the customer, and a payment processing system.
A grocery store chain, Lucilles, has only 5 stores located in Louisiana. The owner of the chain, Lucille Harrison, has decided Lucilles must make the investment to upgrade their checkout process to be more like the large chains they compete with. Currently, Lucilles checkout process includes only a point-of-sale system and the payment processing system provided by a vendor.
Your Deliverable
Your assignment is to analyze Lucilles business process, create Business Process Models for the grocery store checkout process, discuss how the current state is inadequate, and identify benefits that could be generated in a future state solution. Your BPM should include as actor/roles:
The Customer.
The Checker.
The various systems used in the process at Lucilles.
Identify the outputs that are part of the checkout process (include them in your BPMs).
Assumptions:
Customer always pays with a credit card.
Customer is a loyalty club member and provides their card or phone number at the beginning of the checkout process. Diagram the current state business process in a Business Process Model
