Smallville has had a recent increase in traffic accidents involving individuals driving under the influence. One reason is that there is a new club on the south side of town that is offering great prices on alcohol, a popular DJ, and late hours. The police decide that the best way to crack down on people driving under the influence is to set up a traffic safety checkpoint down the street from the new club. The police set up at 10:00 p.m., completely blocking the road and stopping every car driving down the road. Patty Partier is leaving the club and headed to another club across town. She drives through the checkpoint and the officer asks for her driver's license and insurance. She explains to the officer that she does not have her license because she lost it. The officer runs Patty's name and Social Security number through the database and finds out that Patty has lost her license because it has been revoked for driving under the influence. The officer also sees that there is an outstanding warrant for Patty's arrest for failing to show up for her district court case of driving under the influence. The officer arrests Patty for the outstanding warrant and calls the city wrecker to tow her car. Pursuant to the city's policy, the officer inventories the contents of the vehicle prior to it being towed. The officer finds cocaine in the glovebox and a straw fashioned to snort cocaine through. The officer then adds the charges of possession of controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia to Patty's arrest report. Patty contests the search and seizure of the cocaine.
