Smokers endorse many reasons for smoking cigarettes.When cigarette advertising was allowed (there was a time when it was) advertisements for women often involved images of very slender and thin women (e.g., the cigarette brand Virginia Slims was explicitly marketed towards women).This leads a researcher to wonder whether smoking to control weight would be more strongly related to difficulty in quitting smoking for women than men.
A study is conducted in which each participant completes the Smoking Expectancies Questionnaire (SEQ), one factor is "I smoke to control weight" which has 5 items each answered on a 0-3 Likert scale with higher numbers indicating greater expectation of controlling weight by smoking.Each participant also completes the Expected Success in Quitting Smoking questionnaire (ESQS), which has 10 items answered on a 1-4 Likert scale with higher number indicating greater expected success in quitting.
