Social issue : Race and ethnicity
Popular culture categories:
1. Movies
Movie producers are often reluctant to cast more than a few minority actors in otherwise race-neutral movies for fear that the white audiences will largely avoid such films. We see many movies in which white actors are portraying people of other races and ethnicities.
2. Advertising
Advertising is a powerful force within societyboth reflecting and shaping cultural norms
Although the U.S. has become more racially and ethnically diverse, minorities still face a lot of racism and unfair treatment, this can be seen in how minorities are treated in the criminal justice system, at work, and in society. Race and ethnicity are still social issues because there are still big differences in education, income, and other measures of well-being between different groups. Look back to 50 years ago, how have times changed?
Please provide input to the following:
- How has the audience and social values changed over time in relation to your popular culture artifact/expression categories within the last 50+ years? (Race in movies/advertisement).
- How have the popular culture categories(Movies/advertisement) either reflected or opposed the changing audience and social values?
- If the audience and social values have changed over time with regard to one of the popular culture categories(Movies/advertisement), describe the changes.
Thank you!!!!!
