Socializing can strengthen bonds and form good relationships at work.

Socializing outside of work can have a downside. For example, it can be good to have boundaries between home and work. When these lines blur, it's hard to turn off work when you go home and turn off home when you go to work.

Also, it can be hard to remove friendship from the equation when you are in a position to correct someone or someone has to correct you. Then what? And, I have to say that I have seen several careers ruined when a person has too much to drink or finds themselves in a compromising position in social situations.
