The waste result of oil sands extraction and upgrading is stored in tailings ponds, which are settling ponds. They consist of a mixture of water, sand, silt, clay, unrecovered hydrocarbons, and other pollutants. Existence of tailings ponds poses a number of environmental challenges. Ammonia, mercury, and naphthenic acids are some of the most poisonous and hazardous substances found in the ponds. These substances are hazardous to animals, especially aquatic species. An additive is usually used as a settling agent to facilitate the settling process and reduce the required time. Let's assume that there are two ponds connected to each other as shown in Figure Figure 1. Oll Sand Tallilng Pond In Alberta [1]. 2. In the settling process, the dirty water is initially mixed with the agent and sent to the first tank (with a constant flowrate of 2m3/s. The concentration of agent in the inlet stream is constant and equals to 0.5 kg/m3 ). Calculate the mass of additive in Pond 1 and Pond 2, as a function of time. - Pond 1, contains 20m3 of water with no initial amount of additive. - Pond 2, contains 10m3 of water with no initial amount of additive. FIGURE 2. TAIL POND FLOWRATE Q1. What is the maximum mass of the additive in Pond 1(kg) ? Q2. What is the ultimate mass of the additive in Pond 1(kg) ? Q3. What is the ultimate mass of the additive in Pond 2(kg)
