Some people have expressed a great deal of concern over what is called the "compression" problem-the fact that the salary differential between experienced and inexperienced people is too small. The data presented in Table 8-2 shown that the salary of an engineer with 30 years of experience (and with on supervisory responsibilities) is about 2 times that of person with on experience. Some member of the profession insist that the ratio between the salaries of experienced and inexperienced people should be 2.5 instead of 2. Someday you will be on the "experienced person" side of this issue and will undoubtedly have developed a point of view on this matter. At the current stage of your career, on the "inexperienced person" side of this matter, what view do you think you will have of this issue 30 years from now? Do you think your views will be different than they are today? If you believe that the ratio of experienced to inexperienced salaries should be greater than it is, how would you go about achieving that end? Would you attempt, through professional societies, to limit the supply of new engineers, thereby creating an artificial shortage? This route has been advocated by some.
