Some primitive religions teach that the celestial bodies we call stars (or planets) are gods. This view was common in the ancient Greek world, and it was espoused by Thales of Miletus (fl. 6th century BC), one of the greatest thinkers of all time. Needless to say, ancient Greeks knew nothing about nuclear fusion in stars, though they were certainly aware that the Sun is much larger than it appears to the unaided eye and that plants need light and water to grow.
