Some regulations require employers to have written procedures/instructions for specific activities/conditions. The number of practices/procedures and the degree of detail will depend on the range of work activities your company performs. It is important that management and supervision are involved in the development of safe work practices and that they provide adequate training for workers likely to follow these practices.

Companies feel it is prudent to develop a set of rules specific to their operations and sector. These rules normally reflect legislative requirements such as use of personal protective equipment, and fall arrest systems. However, companies exceed laws and minimum requirements and develop additional rules, such as mandatory eye protection, smoking in the workplace, alcohol and other drugs, horseplay, etc.

Companies should establish rules to govern the conduct and actions of their employees and these rules should be enforced and action taken when a rule is violated. Safety rule samples are found at the following link: http://www.ihsa.ca/resources/company_hs_rules.aspx

Develop a portion of the health and safety program that addresses work practices and job procedures forms, as well as practices for equipment, fall protection, hazards, traffic control and tools are available at the following link. http://www.ihsa.ca/resources/safe_practices_procedures.aspx
