Sometimes our emotions, attitudes, or insecurities can get in the way of our ability to listen. Our willingness to pay attention, listen without judgment, andpracticeempathy is compromised.

In Topic 2.2 this week,we heard Alexis complain to her colleague about her difficult work week. She mentioned Jonas kept bothering her.

"It's been a rough day," Alexis said through gritted teeth. "My client is impossible. I had too many meetings. Jonas kept bothering me. I have a killer headache. And I still haven't finished my timesheet. If only it was Friday."

"Gosh, Alexis, I'm sorry to hear you had such a rotten day," Tara replied putting an arm around her colleague's shoulder. "Your client has no idea how lucky they are to have your representation. Is there any way I can help you get through the week?"

Put yourself in her colleague's situation by responding to the following:

  • If Alexis had been talking to you, how would you have responded if Jonas was your respected friend and confidant?
  • Would an interruption be justifiable? Why or why not?
  • How does context affect an active listener's response?

Now reflect on a time when you struggled to listen.

  • Describe the situation.
  • What made it difficult?
  • How did you discover you weren't actively listening? What was the result?
  • What did you learn from the experience?
