They must stay in communal accommodation with fellow trainees. The reason for the prohibition on staying with or seeing family is trainees are to focus solely on their training and family responsibilities provide distractions.Magdalene applies to become a police officer. Her application is successful and she is invited to attend. Without training she cannot become a police officer. Magdalene has a husband and two children aged 2 and 5. Her dream is to become a police officer. She enquires whether her family can stay with her. She is told that this is not possible and she must commit to participate in the training without seeing them. She is allowed to have a cellphone and will be able to call them. She is told if she is not prepared to make this sacrifice she is not cut out to be a police officer. Magdalene is extremely upset because she feels unable to live apart from her family for so long.
