Sports have been known to build confidence, character and self-esteem for individuals. Along with these benefits, however, come expenses for parents of children in a sport or for you to continue a healthy active lifestyle.

You may use your sport experience and financial knowledge if you have or are currently participating in a sport. If you do not participate in a sport then you may research the financial components to a sport or interview someone that participates in a sport and is willing to inform you of the expenses they are responsible to pay for their sport.

You must include the following if applicable; equipment costs, rental fees (ice, pool, etc.), coaching costs, travel expenses (hotel, food, plane tickets), training costs (gym membership, home equipment, personal trainers), memberships fees (leagues, organizations, clubs), medical expenses (chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage), competition/ tournament fees and any other expense that may occur for your sport throughout the year. You may also include any assistance that you may have been given to pay towards your sport. For example if you have received a government grant or tax compensation, competition winnings, sponsorship deals, organization donations or bursaries.

Task 1: The expenses should be displayed in an organized manner and easy to follow. You may use a table or an excel spreadsheet to display your findings.

Task 2: Once you have totaled your expenses write a full-page reflection (Max three hundred words) on the numbers you have displayed. Answer the following questions in your reflection piece.

1. Does the total of this expense sheet hinder your ability to still take part in this sport? Why or why not?

2. Does the total shock you? Why or why not?

3. Do you feel the expense of this sport only allows for certain people (social or economic status) to participate in this sport? Why or why not?

4. Is there a way to make this sport more approachable to lower income families?

5. Is it possible to continue playing this sport as an adult? Give an example of a local league and the estimated cost to play as an adult. (Google where to play close to you and associated league fees).
