Spring 2022 Lab 1
Assignment Objective: The objective of this lab is to draw an Entity Relationship (ER) diagram from a given specification (or problem statement).
Instructions: This lab's task is to use Dia to draw an Entity-Relationship diagram based on given information and submit the diagram in JPG format. Choose File Export from the main Popup Menu to save it as Lab1-X.jpg (where X is your last name). If click File save, the file extension is dia. Note that Blackboard cannot open a file in Dia format. To ensure your work can be graded, you must make sure it has been corrected saved in a jpg file and can be viewed from Blackboard.
Task: Design a database for an online movie rental firm. Rental refers to streaming a movie by a user. The requirements are summarized as follows:
Each account documents an owners member ID, first name, last name, email, and credit card number. The member ID is a unique identifier.
Each account can have up to 10 profiles for members of the household. Each profile has a name (not unique across all members, but unique within an account), gender, date of birth, age, and preferred movies genre(s). When a profile streamed a movie, s/he may post a rating. The date and time of streaming should be recorded as well. The rating scale is from 1 to 5, 1 being Do not like, and 5 being Like.
Each movie can be uniquely identified by a unique movie ID, title, year of release, length in minutes, producer, genre(s), and average member rating. Note that each movie can be classified under one or more genres (such as horror, action, drama, etc.)
Each movie is directed by one or more directors and each director must direct one or more movies. Directors are identified by their ID, first name, last name, and date of birth. It is possible for a director to act in a movie, not necessarily in a move they direct.
Each movie has one or more actors acting in it and each actor has a role in the movie. Each actor is identified by a unique ID, and an actor's first and last name.
Prepare your submission: Design an Entity-Relationship diagram for the movie rental database and enter the design using a data-modeling tool such as Dia. Place your name, assignment number, class number, and date in the upper right-hand corner of the file. Explore your diagram and then save it as Lab1-YourName.jpg and submit it Blackboard by Jan. 19 at 3:30 PM. Please note that if the submitted file is not viewable in Blackboard, a zero grade is assigned.
