Stockrite operates a total of one thousand (1000) stores in the country. The holding company's primary business is food and household retailing to consumers of all income levels through the outlets in all the nine provinces. Its goal is to provide communities in rural areas, townships and small towns with food and household items at the most affordable prices. CEO'S REPORT We have learnt through the years that in the communities where we operate, there is a need for affordable food. In many of these communities, a majority of households depend on social grants and many family members in those households are unemployed. It is therefore important to have affordable prices on our food items such as maize meal, beans and milk. As one of the biggest food retailers in the country, our responsibility as Stockrite is to make affordable food and household items accessible to communities at prices they can afford. We also strive to provide products that improve the well-being of the people. When we purchase products from the suppliers, we give them specific information about what we expect on the quality of the products we want. We expect the suppliers to respect the rules and information that we give them regarding the safety standards of the products we want. All our suppliers must be registered and have certifications for providing products we distribute through our stores. We engage with our suppliers to communicate regulation guidelines which are issued by the Organisation for Retail Industry Guidelines (ORIG) feedback on regulatory changes to make sure that they are always aware of supply chain compliance. We also engage these suppliers to ensure that the products which they supply in our stores are safe and healthy for our customers. The workers also demanded an explanation of why some employees earn less than what the government proposed. Due to the strike, Stockrite did not make profits for that month. This was indicated in the company's annual report. Investors such as Robert Smith have raised concerns about the lack of profits that was a result of the strike. When interviewed by a journalist from Daily Post, Mr. Pertesen of RIWU said: "RIWU condems the payment of millions of rands to the CEO of Stockrite Mr. Ronald Beard while some employees are being underpaid. This is exploitation. Mr. Beard plans and approves the development of Stockrite shops all over the country and his plans cannot be successful without the thousands of workers who have to do the manual jobs." Stockrite Holdings is planning to build another Stockrite store near the village of Ga-Makaos. The community members of Ga-Makaos have raised a concern to their chief about the company. They complain that the company is planning to build a store on the land that is planned for building a resource centre and school for the blind.
