STEP 1: Read the Information brief for the SALFORD RACING Project Salford Racing is a Formula Student team at the University of Salford. This means that they along with other universities in the UK and around the world compete in the Formula Student UK race competition. This requires students to design and manufacture car parts as well as outsource any other components, to complete the assembly of a single-seater formula style car. The aim is to provide the best possible prototype car for the races that could subsequently be mass manufactured. The project, which is managed by students in their free time outside of curriculum at the University of Salford, runs from induction in late September/ early October, to July when the Formula Student UK event takes place at Silverstone. This gives the project a timeline of around 10 months. This includes breaks from term when official meetings take place. The work is mainly done at home, excluding student exams in late April/early May. The timeline is split into 5 stages: - Onboarding and Design (Sep/Oct - Dec end of term) - Manufacturing (Jan-March) - Assembly (March-April) - Testing (April) - Refinement, Adjustments, and submissions of paperwork for the main event at Silverstone (May-July) The rules require this race car to be powered by a motorcycle-style engine with a maximum capacity of 710cc. It must be designed and built solely by students however, specialist advice is allowed as well as outsourcing various services that students may not have the facilities for. This includes parts that might not be able to be produced within the university facilities due to lack of specialist equipment, skills availability or certification available. Competition rules also state that the competition is solely for Undergraduate, and Postgraduate Taught students and no work can be done by PhD students. The only main rule in-between two competition entries, requires the team to make a significant change to the car, this could be an engine change or more commonly a new chassis to house all the constituents of a Formula Student car. The competition is 'Formula Student UK', is split into Static and Dynamic events. The static events include: a Business presentation, Design presentation and a Cost \& Manufacturing presentation. The dynamic events test the car's handling, speed and acceleration as well as the all-round performance in different scenarios on a track. The aim is to provide solid foundations for the car prototype at the competition, showing a strong business model, careful planning, budgeting, and costing of materials, processes, and manufacture, as well as a sound design supported by data and of course results on the track. Salford Racing's main aim for this year is to pass all key stages, and to maintain their position of the best team in the Northwest. To do this Salford Racing plans to compete in all the dynamic events in the competition, where the car is put to the test. As well as that, the team aims to solidify their place within the three presentations (a Business presentation, Design presentation and a Cost \& Manufacturing presentation) and to reach top 15 ranking in each of them. The team's budget for manufacturing all the parts, improving some systems of the car, and maintaining the quality of current ones is 35,000. This does not include admin costs of entering the competition nor any machines and specialist equipment which is readily available at the University. The team is split into 3 parts: Engineering, Business and Media. - The Engineering team is mostly made up of the engineering team that is split into 6 subteams: Aerodynamics, Chassis, Dynamics, Electrical, Statics and Powertrain. All these work on the relevant parts within each sub-team. This must be managed for each stage of the project: design, manufacture, prototype, test, and final assembly. Each decision and action has to be documented as part of the event submission. - The Business team's aim is to work on the Business presentation required for the event and on acquiring more funds from sponsors to improve the quality of parts. The business team need to consider personnel upskilling and training. - The Media team's aim is to take photographic records for submissions and to improve the quality of the business presentation. The focus is also on producing social media content to promote the team to potential sponsors while maintaining relationships with current ones. You have been assigned as the Project Manager for Salford Racing to work with the Engineering , Business and Media teams that would develop the car for the July 2024 race. At this initiation stage as a project manager, you would need to develop a project plan/outline business case that would be reviewed by the Salford Racing Team Principle to demonstrate on how you will manage this project over the 5 key stages and up to the day of the race. Your project plan/outline business case should include the following thematic areas listed below, and propose how the project can be deliver successfully: - The project's Mission and Objectives including the anticipated Impact that the project will have to the all main stakeholders; - A full stakeholder management plan; - An outline project activity plan using the appropriate Planning Breakdown Structures; - A resource allocation and utilisation plan by using a Resource Assignment Matrix; - A cost estimation and allocation for the duration of the project using an appropriate technique; - A timeline schedule with key milestones; - A Risk Management Assessment table for the 5 key risks associated with the delivery of the project. You will need to take the following into account when completing your assignment. - Establishment of relevant theory; - Allocation of credit and sources used; Clarity of argument and relevance to the project management context; - Overall report presentation including spelling and grammar; - Adherence to nominated word limit. KEY INSTRUCTIONS You will need to take the following into account when completing your assignment. - Each topic should be corelated to a relevant Project Management theory, tool or application and be fully referenced; - All discussion included will need clarity of argument and relevance to the project's context; You should follow an industrial report format. Therefore, your report should have: - Cover page that will include the Project title; - Executive Summary; (not part of the word count) - Contents page; - Introduction; - Main body split in sub sections based on the thematic areas as detailed in page 3. - Discussion and Conclusion; - References / Bibliography; - Appendices if required
