Structural Framework

Six assumptions under structural frame:

1. Organizations exist to achieve established goals and objectives and devise strategies to reach those goals
2. Organizations increase efficacy and enhance performance through specialization and appropriate division of labor
3. Suitable forms of coordination and control ensure that diverse efforts of individuals and units mesh
4. Organizations work best when rationality prevails over personal agendas and extraneous pressures
5. Effective structure fits an organization's current circumstances (including its strategy, technology, workforce, and environment)
6. When performance suffers from structural flaws, the preferred remedy is problem solving and restructuring

Case Study: After reading the Hurricane Katrina article, discuss via the structural leadership frame:

1. Two initial thoughts that you would like to bring to your group discussion in this week's live session.

2. Present an assessment of the hospital organization in an assigned frame from the Bolman and

Deal model.

3. Include an assessment of the leadership at the hospital.

4. Develop leadership strategies to employ when another organization might be confronted by

a similar event.

5. Present a summary outlining the analysis as related to the assigned frame and a bulleted list

of leadership strategies
