Careful consideration of relevant State and/or Federal legislation should also be included.

Case study One
You work with an organisation that assists children and families and have been asked to follow up a referral. On reading the details of the referral you find that the family and children are known to you through your involvement with, and membership of the committee of, the local school. You have heard from your own children that the Dawsons are a very religious family and have many rules about behaviour in the home. You are also concerned about your relationship with Mr Dawson who is a fellow committee member. You would have preferred another worker to take the case, but this is impossible due to staff shortages. At home that evening your son volunteers the information that the youngest Dawson boy was belted by his father for stealing a dollar coin from a kitchen jar.
Case Study Two
Brian was taken to the emergency department of a public hospital in the middle of winter after falling over, breaking his leg, and temporarily losing consciousness. Records show he lives alone and does not have any family or support. The doctors are recommending that Brian goes into an Aged Care facility for respite, but Brian is refusing. You are the hospital counsellor, and you are called to discuss Brian’s options.
