Students must be actively engaged in the reading process, and as a result must also be able to apply the concepts to real-world examples. Six reading applications will be assigned with the lowest grade being dropped. Each reading application must address the scenario given and be able to incorporate the actual readings into the scenario as well as being in theoretical and legal support. Students may only rely on objective academic sources or BJS statistics to support their answers. All aspects of the question must be answered. Feedback will be provided. Each discussion is worth 25 points for a total of 100 points.
Note: Please be aware that this is a very explicit case. In your first paragraph, give a brief description of the facts of the case; this sadly is a common issue occurring within the criminal justice system. In reality, those of you who will investigate crimes or work with victims (including children) will be exposed to much worse. This is why it is so important to seek counseling as a criminal justice professional and find legitimate outlets to help alleviate stress.
Please write in paragraph form...Your analysis should include an introductory paragraph and then paragraphs that address each of the systems. Make sure you address each of these questions.
Reading Application 1:
The case of Brock Turner has academics and practitioners alike shaking their heads. Research the case and complete the following questions based on your information. Note: All information has to be cited in APA.
Each offender who comes into the criminal justice system will be touched by the 3 major systemic components. Address Brock Turner's interaction with the 3 major systems using Chapters 2 & 3 and any outside academic sources that you may need.
1. Introductory Paragraph explaining the events prior to the investigation
2. Police
*What was Brock Turner arrested for? What did the police do right in their arrest and investigation of the case? What evidence did they have?
*Did they do anything wrong? If so, based on your readings, what are two other options the police could have taken?
3. Courts
*What did the court system do? Did the prosecutors adequately do their jobs? What effect did the probation officer's report have on the trial? Was he deemed innocent or guilty? If convicted, what was the crime?
*Did the judge do his job? What was the sentence? What factors aggravating/mitigating factors played a role in this decision? Was the decision just? If not, what were 2 other options the judge had in sentencing?
4. Corrections
How much time did he serve in a correctional facility? Was this sentence proportionate to the crime? What is the average sentence length for a crime such as this? Please provide specific examples of sentence length for such a crime. Would his sentence have been different if he was a lower-class, 18-year-old Hispanic male? Why or why not?
5. What tier of the wedding cake model would this case fall under? Make sure to explain your answer.
Note: This must be based on the literature. This is NOT an opinion piece. There are some decisions that are simply wrong, so make sure you research accordingly. Remember to cite in APA (in-text and).
