Students were frequently used as subjects for professors' research projects. Such a practice was convenient for the professors as it reduced the need to recruit participants. Furthermore, students were contributing to the advancement of knowledge, which they may or may not have appreciated. Although occurring less frequently, the practice still occurred. There were college policies relating to the practice and agencies that funded research had strict policies about obtaining consent and making participation voluntary. Professor :Murray had colleagues who used students as research subjects. He had heard that some of his colleagues secretly conducted surveys in their classes without advising the administration. He thought that students should not be asked to participate in a study by their professor under any circumstances. It was diicult, if not impossible, to eliminate the real or perceived inuence or power that the professor had with students. He was thinking of proposing a college policy that disallowed soliciting survey participation in the classroom setting. If faculty wanted to use students in their studies, they should advertise for them and perhaps o'er incentives. The important point would be that the studies would not be associated with a particular course and classroom setting.
