Case Study
In May 2020, peaceful protests exploded across the world, and in particular, in the US and Canada. However, in June 2020, Premier Doug Ford stated that Canada doesnt have the systemic, deep roots of racism that the United States does (Global News, June 2020). Canadians are not always aware that Black people have once been enslaved in Canada's territory or how those who fought and opposed enslavement were instrumental in building a diverse society in Canada. Anti-Black racism is prevalent in Canada today and there are many contemporary examples of it, including the violence that we see in police brutality. In 2018, the Ontario Human Rights Commission found that a Black person was nearly 20 times more likely to be shot and killed by the police in Toronto compared to a white person, data collected between the years of 2013 and 2017 (The Canadian Encyclopedia, 2022).
It is November, and your works year-end is December, this means that all your major projects, reports, and budgets need to be submitted to your manager in a few short weeks. You have learned that there is a peaceful march happening in your city against anti-Black racism, and you want to support the march by attending with your partner and your friends, however, it is happening in the middle of your workday. You know this is an important cause, and as an ally, it is important that you take actionable efforts to show you are against anti-Black racism in your community.
You have a one-on-one meeting with your manager, and you ask them if you can attend the peaceful march later this week during the workday. Your manager says no and states that you should prioritize your work. Later in a team meeting, your manager brings up the peaceful march and says that we should all focus on our work as it a busy time of year, and that racism doesnt happen at our company and in our community, so this is not our fight. You notice that your colleagues, who are racialized people, including Larry who immigrated from Nigeria as a child, are uncomfortable, but no one on the teams says anything.
You know that racism exists, and that as an ally, you have to say something. How do you handle this conflict and what tools do you use to help you better manage the conflict?
