Sulfur dioxide SO2 is considered as most effective gaseous stimulant for atmospheric corrosion. At this, tetravalent sulfur ( e.g. SO2) is oxidized to hexavalent sulfur (e.g. SO42 ) to react with iron as the main steel component.
