Summary:
Data from n=205 students in a statistics class for students in the social and behavioral sciences.
The survey was done in the Spring semester of 2000.(Source: Mind on Statistics(Utts and Heckard))
The dataset has been modified for this homework.
Variable Names in order from left to right:
ColumnNameDescription
AGenderMale or Female
BTattooDoes student have a tattoo (Yes or No)
CCDsCategorized number of the student's estimate of how many music CDs he/she owns
(BelowAvg = 0 to 30, Average = 31 to 80, AboveAvg = more than 80)
DHeightSelf-reported height in inches
E EarPrcNumber of ear piercings
Instructions: Use the pennstate2 dataset to answer the questions below using MS EXCEL.Report your results in clear, professional English. Refer to the syllabus, the rubric and the HW Requirements document for details. You can also use nburney.hw1_2.pdf as an example for your homework product. Use short answer format by embedding your tables/graphs/analytics within your word document. Be sure to include a qualitative answer for each question. Do not include the question in your homework document.
1.Create a table that lists all the variables in the data set. In this table, also include headings "Label" (a more thorough description of the variable, if needed); "General Type" (either quantitative or categorical); "Specific Type" (either identifier variable, interval/ratio, nominal, or ordinal). Provide this information for each variable in the data set. Finally, include a heading "Measurement Units" and specify the measurement units for quantitative variables. Use N/A when there are no measurement units.
2.For each of the five variables, provide all of the appropriate descriptive statistics (including measurements of central tendency and dispersion, among others where applicable). Use the Descriptive Statistics analysis tool when possible. Remember, for the qualitative variables, this includes constructing and commenting upon a frequency table and a discussion of the mode. For the quantitative variables, explain why the mean or the median is the best representation of central tendency and the standard deviation or IQR of dispersion. This is decided by examining the histogram and boxplot.Identify the appropriate measures and state the associated values from the descriptive statistics table.
3.Perform a stratified analysis of the mean of the two quantitative variables by "Tattoo" status. Compare and contrast the mean number of piercings and mean height between these two groups.
4.Using the Pivot Table tool, perform a stratified analysis of the "EarPrc" variable by the "CDs" variable.Include the total number of piercings per "CD" group and the average number of piercings per "CD" group in the table.Which of these values is more useful in analyzing how many ear piercings are present within the different groups of "CDs"?Explain.
5.Create a bar chart and a pie chart for the "CDs" variable. Which is a better visualization of the variable? Why?
6.Using the Pivot Table tool, provide a contingency table of Gender by CDs. Report the frequency counts and all three percentages - row, column and total. Briefly explain the differences between these types of percentages through an example explanation of each. You will have four tables.
7.Use the frequency counts you generated in question 6 to create a stacked bar chart. Then create a 100% stacked bar chart. Describe the differences between these graphics and determine which graph is a better visualization of the relationship of the two variables.
8.Using the RAND function, generate a random sample of 35 observations. Display your sample with the random numbers in a table. Generate the descriptive statistics for the quantitative variables only for this sample and display them in a table.
9.Construct and report 90%, 95% and 99% confidence intervals for the quantitative variable, Height, in a table.Interpret the 95% confidence interval in context.
