Synthesis gas (syngas) is sometimes prepared through a process of continuous and noncatalytic hydrocarbon conversion via controlled partial oxidation in a refractory-lined reactor. A basic system using this process separately preheats and mixes the hydrocarbon and oxidant before being fed to the reactor. The evolved heat pyrolyzes any residual hydrocarbons into small amount of carbon in the reaction zone as well as product gas. The effluent of the reactor passes through a waste-heat boiler then a water-wash unit to remove the carbon, and then a scrubber that is water-cooled. Carbon is recovered in equipment similar to flash vessel in a form that can be used in conventional carbon products or as a fuel. Prepare a suitable flowsheet for the process with major equipment and streams labeled by fluid/component/type.
