Table 9.2 Confidence Index Scores In the 2002 General Social Survey, respondents were asked whether they had " a great deal," *only some," or "hardly any" confidence in the military, organized religion, banks and financial institutions, major companies, organized labor, the press, television, education, medicine, the scientific community, the United States Supreme Court, Congress, and the Executive branch of the federal government. Responses to these items were "reverse scored," so that a low value corresponds to low confidence. Responses were summed, and a mean score was computed for each respondent who answered all 13 items. The distribution of these Confidence Index scores, which can be treated as interval-ratio data, is given in Table 9.2, and a graph of the distribution is shown in Figure 9.2. The median of the distribution is 2.00, the mean is 1.95, and the standard deviation is .33.
